Walk Notes

O.S.Map 43 (Braemar).

N.B. 8.00am start from Aberdeen.

Today, we are back on Deeside/Glenshee to walk the hills to the south of Braemar. Your Club has not done these walks since August 2012. We will have a short comfort stop at Aboyne, before heading towards our start point at the Cairnwell Ski Centre. These walks are through-ones, so members who require a shorter or different walk – please indicate your intentions with your committee member in charge of the bus.

  1. For the “West Side” walk. From the bus (NGR 139 781), head NW’wards through the ski lifts towards Butchart’s Corrie to the col between Cairnwell and Carn Aosda. Once past a ski hut, turn S’wards with good views over lonely Loch Vrotachan. Continue on the path uphill and contour spectacular Coire Direach to reach the summit of Carn-nan-Sac (920m). From here, head W’wards across the plateau to the highest point of the walk – Carn an Gheoidh (975m). From this summit, go (S’wards) over Carn Mor (876m), Creagan Bheithe (759m) and Ben Gulabin (806m) to descend to our bus near the Spittal of Glenshee.

Walking distance approx. 10 miles

  1. For the “East Side” walk. Leave the bus at NGR 141 775 on the A93 road, just beyond the southernmost ski centre carpark and follow a track uphill to the bottom of a ski tow at NGR 149 775. From here, climb E‘wards up to the summit of Meal Odhar (922m). From this top, contour SE’wards and gain the summit trig of Glas Maol (1068m). From this summit trig, go SW’wards to the summit of Creag Leacach. Continue along this stony ridge passing Carn Ait (864m), Carn Aig Mhala (768m) and Carn Chomb-Stri (718m) to reach Carn an Daimh (755m). From here, descend W’wards to pick up a path going down to the farm of Tomb. This leads W’wrds to the A93 road and our bus parked near the Spittal (NGR 109 701).

Walking distance approx. 10 miles.

Bus departs at 3.30pm.

In the event of an emergency arising, the person in charge of the outing should be contacted, if possible, before the police are contacted.

Relevant telephone number for Tayside police is 101 (non emergency) or 999.

Committee member in charge today is Janet Rickard
