Our walk today takes us over to the north side of the Cairngorms and also into the Rothiemurchus Forest Park area. 3 walks are suggested below, but many other walks are possible in this huge region. For safety reasons, please advise your AHWC Committee member in charge of the outing, which walk you will be following.
We will be dropped off at different starting points, but all walks will finish at the “sugarbowl” carpark on the Cairngorm ski road at NGR 985 074.
- Braeriach – From the “sugarbowl” carpark, cross the ski road and drop down the footpath to cross the Allt Creag an Leth-Choin at Utsi’s Bridge (built in commemoration of the Laplander Mikel Utsi who introduced reindeer into Scotland in 1952). Follow this path SW’wards into the Chalamain Gap. Once through this small ravine, head SW into the Lairig Ghru, cross the Allt Druidh burn and climb S’wards up the long shoulder towards the summit of Sron na Lairige (1184m) before turning SW’wards and then W’wards for the summit of Braeriach (1296m). Return the same way back to the bus parking area. Distance approx. 14 miles
- “Goats Track” & Cairn Lochan – from the south end of the Ski Centre Carpark (NGR 989 060), take the track heading WSW and before reaching the Allt Coire an t – Sneachda, take the left hand path at the split (NGR 986 056). This path leads into the upper reaches of Coire an t-Sneachda with its two tarns. Climb steeply SW’wards on the “goats track” at the head of the coire to eventually gain the plateau. From the plateau, head WSW’wards along the edge of the Northern Corries towards Cairn Lochan (1215m). Continue E’wards to join a path near spot height 1083m and veer N’wards and NE’wards along the shoulder of Lurchers Gully, passing the Allt Creag an Leth-choin and Allt Coire an t- Sneachda before returning to the Ski Centre carpark where a “newish” path descends alongside the east side of the Allt Coire an t-Sneachda and Allt Creag an Leth-choin burns to arrive at Utsi’s Bridge. Ascend slightly through the trees to emerge at the bus parked at the “Sugarbowl” Carpark.

- Low level walk around Loch an Eilein and Loch Morlich.
Those choosing this walk will be dropped off at the Inverdruie Visitor Centre (approx NGR 902 109) where the road southwards towards Blackpark is taken. This leads in about a mile to the north end of Loch an Eilein. The NE shore of the loch is then followed for about half a mile to a fork in the path where the left fork is taken. This leads in about another mile to the Allt Druidh where the Cairngorm Club Footbridge is crossed and the path through Rothiemurchus Forest is followed ENE to reach the west end of Loch Morlich. From there, a path round the south shore of the loch is followed which heads eastwards to join the ski road at NGR 980 091. A 2 km walk southwards up the ski road leads to the “sugarbowl” parking place.
