Walk Notes

AHWC –  Braenaloin to Keiloch and Alternatives.

15th September 2019.         O.S.Maps 36,37 and 43. (Grantown and Cairngorm, Strathdon, and Braemar).

Bus Leaves Aberdeen at 8.00 am.

The main walk is a through one, so anyone wanting a different walk should travel with the bus to the finishing point and do their own thing. Two alternative walks are given below, but you might think differently. Walkers are advised to make their requirements known to the committee member in charge today, prior to leaving the bus.

  1. The main walk commences at Braenaloin (NGR 280 999). Walk along Glen Gairn for about 4.5 miles passing Daldownie and eventually arrive at the ruin of Corndavon Lodge (NGR 228 021) after crossing the River Gairn to its north side. From the lodge, head W’wards to NGR 212 019 to a wooden bridge over the River Gairn. Cross the bridge and head SW’wards to join a path at NGR 203 997 on the east side of Culardoch (900m). Continue S’wards then SW’wards into Glen Fearder, then E’wards below Tom na h-Eilrig (604m) to join a track just before the Allt Cul. This track heads southwards for about 4miles towards Keiloch and our bus (NGR 187 914)   Walking distance 15miles.

2. From our bus at Keiloch, head right towards Felagie. At a split in the path (NGR 190 917) head left and walk NW’wards. The first bench you come to is Willie Robb’s (NGR 180 920). Continue along this path                 and eventually you will reach Jimmy Bremner’s bench (NGR 182 923). Both Willie & Jimmy were past members of the Walking Club and the estate helped with the placing of the benches. Continue along this               path and soon you will be at the Fog House. At this place, head S’wards towards Invercauld House and then SE’wards back to the bus at Keiloch.  Walking distance approx. 4 miles.

3. Walk back S’wards to the A93 and cross the River Dee by the Invercauld Bridge. Turn left, once over the bridge and head for the forest. Go SE’wards to gain the Falls of Garbh Allt. Retrace your steps to the                  main path and head downhill. Take a right turn at a junction (NGR 197 897). Continue on the path, cross a wooden bridge, continue ahead at a fork (NGR 200 901). Ignore two paths on your right side. At                      another fork go hard left (NGR 211 911) and head SW’wards back to the Invercauld Bridge and onwards to the bus parked at Keiloch.            Walking distance approx. 6 miles.
