The main walk is a through one, so anyone wanting a different or shorter walk should travel with the bus to the finishing point at Keiloch and choose one of the 2 options below for a circular walk. Anyone wishing to do something else entirely are advised to make their requirements known to the committee member in charge today, prior to leaving the bus.
- Braenaloin to Keiloch with Option of Climbing The Corbett Cullardoch -Through Walk
The main walk commences at Braenaloin (NGR 280 999). From the bus head Northwards towards the river Gairn and follow the track beside the river for about 4.5 miles passing Daldownie and eventually arriving at the ruin of Corndavon Lodge (NGR 228 021) after crossing the River Gairn to its north side. From the lodge, head W’wards to NGR 212 019 to a wooden bridge over the River Gairn. Cross the bridge and head SW’wards to join a path at NGR 203 997 on the east side of Culardoch (900m).
Cullardoch: Walkers wishing to climb Culllardoch (which is a Corbett) should leave the track at this point & head in a Westerly direction to gain the northern ridge of Cullardoch – there is no path on this route. Make your way uphill to the top & once there head Westwards downhill to gain the track there which heads Southwards until it eventually rejoins the route of those walkers who did not take in the Corbett. Note; There is an extra 535 feet of ascent & 570 feet of descent for those climbing Cullardoch which also adds around 30 minutes to the walk.
From NGR 203 997, those not climbing the Corbett should continue S’wards then SW’wards into Glen Fearder, then E’wards below Tom na h-Eilrig (604m) to join a track just before the Allt Cul. This track heads southwards (ignoring any tracks off to left or right) for about 4miles towards the car park at Keiloch and our bus (NGR 187 914)
Walking distance 14.6 miles – Ascent: 1,404 feet; Descent: 1,516 feet. With Cullardoch – 14.9 miles; Ascent -1,978 feet; Descent – 2,136 feet
Max elevation: 709 m
Min elevation: 321 m
- The Benches & The Fog House – Circular Walk at Invercauld Estate
From our bus at Keiloch car park , head right & walk North Eastwards in the direction of Felagie. At a split in the path (NGR 190 917) head left and walk NW’wards. The first bench you come to is Willie Robb’s (NGR 180 920). Continue along this path, taking the right hand path at the junction (NGR 184 922) and eventually you will reach Jimmy Bremner’s bench (NGR 182 923). Both Willie & Jimmy were past members of the Walking Club and Invercauld Estate helped with the placing of the benches which were provided by our club. Continue along this path and soon you will be at the Fog House. This is a Scottish term for a small shelter used for recreational purposes & traditionally is lined with mossy turf (fog) & usually thatched with heather. At this place, head S’wards in a zig zag pattern towards Invercauld House and then SE’wards back to the bus at Keiloch car park.
Walking distance approx. 4 miles.-Ascent: c. 470 feet; Descent: c. 485 feet
Max elevation: 464 m
Min elevation: 321 m
- The Garbh Allt Falls & Back – Circular Walk at Ballochbuie Forest
From Keiloch car park head left & walk Southwards to the A93. Cross the road carefully (it’s a very busy road) & follow the path in the direction of the River Dee where the path it turns right & heads to the Invercauld Bridge. Cross the bridge, turn left head Southwest & after about 0.25 km take the right hand tract at the 3-way junction which heads North West at first before turning & heading Southwards through the forest for 2km approx. until you reach a large log cabin. This is the “Honka House” which was a favourite picnic spot for our late Queen Elizabeth. It was a gift from Finland to celebrate her Silver Wedding Anniversary. From the cabin cross the Glenbeg Burn & head North Eastwards for just over 1 km, ignoring tracks/paths off on the right until reaching a “T” junction. Take the narrow path off to the right to reach the Garbh Allt falls & green metal bridge. There are good views of the stream from the bridge. Retrace your steps back to the “T” junction & head Southwards, ignoring the track off to the left & another later off to the right until you reach the Glenbeg Burn which is crossed then follow the track left with the River Dee on your RHS until the “3-way” junction is reached again. From here it’s a simple walk to the Invercauld Bridge & then back to the bus at Keiloch the same way as the inward route.
Walking distance just over 5 miles. Ascent: 535 feet; Descent: 538 feet.
Max elevation: 450 m
Min elevation: 312 m
