O.S. Map 43 (Braemar).
Today’s main walk takes us along a ridge of hills to the west side of Glen Clunie, just to the south of Braemar. Because this walk is a through-one, anyone who requires a shorter walk, or different walk will have to liaise with the committee member in charge of the outing and make their intentions known, prior to that person(s) leaving the bus.
The main walk commences near the confluence of the Baddoch and Cairnwell burns that merge into the Clunie Water near Baddoch (NGR 139 831). From this starting point, cross the bridge and head SW’wards along the valley of the Baddoch Burn to approx. NGR 101 790 to where the path peters out. Climb NW’wards to the plateau col (NGR 092 801) between the two tops of An Socach. To reach the main top (944m), head W’wards for just over a kilometre. From this summit, head back to the col and go NE’wards towards its secondary summit (938m). From here, keep to the high ground and head basically N’wards past an unnamed 855m top and onwards (NE’wards) to Sgor Mor (887m). From this summit, head N’wards to reach Carn Ghriogair, then NE’wards along the edge of Coire na Lairige to the top of Creag a’Mhadaidh (804m). Continue to Carn na Drochaide (830m) and follow the high ground again to meet a wide track coming up from Auchallater to eventually reach Morrone (859m). Descend on a good path NE’wards to soon reach Braemar, where our bus will be parked (NGR 150 914) Walking distance approx. 15miles.
A shorter alternative walk starts at Braemar and follows the uphill road as far as the carpark at NGR 143 910. Enter the Morrone Birkwood and follow the path until NGR 128 902. Follow it back NE’wards, then E’wards to a viewpoint at NGR 142 905 and back to our bus in Braemar (NGR 150 913). Walking distance approx. 4 miles.
Another shorter walk commences in Braemar (NGR 150 914). Walk S’wards until NGR 152 882 and climb the wide path to the top of Morrone. Descend the wide path NE’wards back to Braemar.
Walking distance approx. 7miles.
BUS DEPARTS AT 6.30pm.
In the event of an emergency arising, the person in charge of the outing should be contacted, if possible, before the police or emergency services are contacted.
Relevant telephone number for the police is 999.
