O.S.Map 38 (Aberdeen).

N.B. Departure from Aberdeen – 9am.

Our walk today takes us into the Bennachie range of tracks and paths. This walk is a through route, so members can have a shorter walk – so please indicate your intentions with your committee member in charge of the bus.

The walk today has two options (1) a low level walk which follows part of the old Aberdeen “Turnpike Road” and (2) a high level route over the tops of Bennachie. Both routes terminate at the Bennachie Visitor Centre.

Our walks commence at the Back o’ Bennachie Car Park (NGR 661 246) near the village of Oyne on the B9002.

Route 1. From Hillford Croft, head N’wards a short distance to a “Rights of Way” signpost on your left, opposite a gate on your right. Go through this gate and head E’wards towards Horndoyne and Newmains and at about NGR 687 244, take the right hand split in the path which heads eventually towards the rear entrance to Pittodrie House (the left hand path goes to the Rowantree Carpark). The path veers S’wards here (near rear entrance) and continues past Braeside to eventually arrive at the Bennachie Visitor Centre car park where our bus will be parked.

Route 2. From the car park, head S’wards through the forest on an ascending zig-zag track to eventually emerge from the forest onto the Bennachie hillside. Take the path towards Oxen Craig (528m), the highest point of the Bennachie range. After gaining this summit, retrace your steps and head E’wards towards the top of Craigshannoch. From here, head SE’wards on a good track to climb to the top of Mither Tap (518m). Retrace your steps from the summit and from an information board, giving details of the old fortress on Mither Tap, descend the steepish path SE’wards from this spot to gain the woods around the Bennachie Visitor Centre where our bus will be parked.

Walking distance (both walks) approx. 8 miles

Bus departs at 2.30 pm.

In the event of an emergency arising, the person in charge of the outing should be contacted, if possible, before the police are contacted.
