AHWC. Auchlean circular (inc. Sgor Gaoith or Mullach Clach a’ Bhlair).
13th July 2014. O.S.Map 36 (Grantown & Aviemore).
N.B. 7.00am. start from Aberdeen.
The walk today takes your Club to some of the hills above Upper Glen Feshie. This walk is a circular one, so members who require a shorter walk – please indicate your intentions with your committee member in charge of the bus.
(1) Sgor Gaoith and Carn Ban Mor. From the car park, (NGR 851 984), head S’wards a short distance and then E’wards towards a stile over a high fence to gain the main track up the valley of the Allt Fhearnagan burn. Follow this path as it ascends steadily for a couple of miles to gain the shoulder just south of the Carn Ban Mor summit (1052m). Gain this summit and continue N’wards to the top of Sgor Gaoith (1118m) overlooking Loch Einich. From this top, descend W’wards to follow the Allt a’ Chrom-alltain burn down to pick up a path which skirts the eastern slopes of Meall Tionail and descends through the trees to reach a forest road just north east of Balachroick Farm. This road is followed S’wards up the glen to reach our bus at the Auchlean car park.

(2) Mullach Clach a’ Bhlair and Lochan Nam Bo. From Auchlean, take the track up the glen S’wards to reach a bridge over the River Feshie near the memorial at Carnachuin (NGR 845 937). Do not cross this bridge, but follow a track which climbs steadily E’wards up the glen of the Allt Choire Chaoil to a junction at NGR 882 936. Turn right here and follow the track S’wards which climbs to the summit of Mullach Clach a’ Bhlair (1019m). From this summit, descend SW’wards on a ridge to Drum nam Bo (918m) and onwards to Lochan nam Bo. From this lochan, descend W’wards to reach a path near Creag na Gaibhre which also descends to the valley floor near the Ruigh-aiteachain bothy. The track from the bothy is then followed back N’wards to the car park at Auchlean.
Walking distance approx. 14 miles.
(3) Ruigh-aiteachain Bothy. From the bus follow the track S’wards for about 4 miles to reach the bothy (NGR 847 928). The return back to the coach may be made either by your inwards route or by the glen road, crossing back to Auchlean by a footbridge at NGR 850 964. Walking distance approx. 8 miles.
