Our walk today takes us into Glen Callater, a glen just a few miles south of Braemar. This walk is a circular one, so members can have a shorter walk – so please indicate your intentions with your committee member in charge of the bus.
The walk commences near the farm at Auchallater (NGR 156 882) at a small car park near the bridge over the Callater Burn. From the car park follow the Scottish Rights of Way track into Glen Callater to reach Callater Lodge (508m) after about 3 miles. Cross the bridge at the NW end of Loch Callater and head SW ‘wards towards Bealach Buidhe (611m). From here, there is no track, but a line of least resistance is taken up the SE shoulder to eventually reach the summit cairn of Creag nan Gabhar (834m). If the weather is good, you will get a superb panoramic view of the surrounding hills and glens. From the summit, descend the north east shoulder and head for Sron nan Gabhar. Continue northwards to eventually reach spot height 584m near to Sron Dubh, where a track zig zags down E’wards towards Glen Callater valley floor and your return path north and then westwards back to the bus at the Auchallater car park.
