O.S.Map 44 ( Ballater & Glen Clova).
N.B. 8.00am start from Aberdeen.
Our walk today takes into Glen Clova – one of the more popular of the Angus glens. We commence the walk at a bad corner of the road between Dykehead and Glen Prosen village. Please leave the bus quickly. This is a through-walk, so walkers that want a shorter or different walk, please indicate your intentions with your committee member in charge today, prior to leaving the bus.
The walk commences at a corner of the road (NGR 371 607) near a memorial to Robert Falcon Scott (Scott of the Antarctic). The bus will drop us off at the bottom of a forest track and small car park. Ascend this track to soon gain the Airlie Tower erected in 1901 to commemorate the 9th Earl who was killed at Diamond Hill in Pretoria during the Boer War. The tower today is currently in a state of disrepair. Continue northwards along the ridge passing The Goal (459m), Hill of Couternach (512m), Hill of Balbae (494m) and Cairn Leith (439m) before descending to meet the “Ministers Road” coming up from Glen Prosen Village near Drumwhern. Do not follow the Ministers Road to Wester Eggie near Glen Clova, but continue northwards for about 1.5 km to a gate near a forest track. Go through the gate and follow the track through the forest to eventually reach the B955 (Glen Clova road). Turn left for a few hundred yards and cross the “newish” bridge over the River South Esk near Inchdowrie House and walk along the main B955 road (with care) for about 1.5km to the car park at the Glen Clova Hotel where our bus will be parked (NGR 327 732).
Walking distance approximately 12 miles.
Bus departs from the Hotel at 4.30pm.
In the event of an emergency arising, the person in charge of the outing should be contacted, if possible, before the police are contacted.
Relevant telephone number for the police is 999.
Committee member in charge today is Hamish Clunes
