After a quick rest break in Alford and we were soon on our way to the Ladder Hills to drop off the main group. Most walked the main posted route, but some went their own way looking for potential future winter cross country skiing routes while others went over the tops looking for views at a dam.
We passed Cairn Vachich, before dropping down and then a reasonably steep climb up passing a small cairn to Weetman John Churchill which has unfortunately fallen off on one side. Then on to The Socach where most had lunch beside its cairn. There were fantastic clear views to distant hills all around. Several abandoned buildings along the route pointed to the use of this landscape in times gone by whilst others have been maintained for use by the estate.
The second group, doing the shorter walk, started in Bellabeg, walked to the Lost Gallery which while unfortunately closed now still has its outdoor sculptures to take in.
The forecasted rain thankfully did not appear with only the odd drizzle for short spells and some good periods of sunshine to help us on our way. We headed back to Alford where a decent number of amenities were open and people split off into going to the pub, a cafe, the shop or chip shop depending on their preference for a well-earned rest and treat.
We hope to see you again on the next walk!
