We had a good turnout of 28 walkers for today’s walk starting in Ferryden on the south side of Montrose. The walk headed eastwards to Scurdie Ness Lighthouse and followed the coast to the Mains of Usan farm. We tried to avoid the cows by going round the farm but landed up on a very muddy track! A better option would have been to go along the shore. The going got easier as we passed the small hamlet of Usan and came to a small cemetery with views down to Elephant Rock which lived up to its name. We had lunch at Dunninald Cemetery which has about a dozen graves. The most intriguing gravestone is right next to the cliff edge which suggests George James Ramsay died 19 years before he was born! (1859-1840). We continued to Boddin Point with the ruined limekilns dating back to the 1700s. We returned to Ferryden on a minor road passing Dunninald Castle with a carpet of snowdrops alongside the road. After a frosty start we had a clear sunny spring like day. Everyone was back on time and we headed back to Aberdeen arriving at 4pm. Fiona
