A good showing of 34 walkers ventured out to the Dunecht Estate on a clear and crisp February morning after a short travel from Aberdeen. Heading through the impressive main estate entrance gates we continued through the grounds past the loch before heading along a farm road where a kite was seen scouting for some prey.

A short walk on and leaving the main path heading through a gate there was some navigating of the faint path to be done through some close gorse bushes to start heading up Barmekin Hill itself. A short climb later and at the top you could see the two rings of stone which are the main remains of the iron age fort that once stood here.

There were clear views of all the North East hills around with some impressive amounts of snow on some in the distance. Lunch was then had before heading down and back into the estate itself. Some paid a closer visit to Dunecht House itself, again with some impressive gates, before continuing to on to finish the circuit.

Everyone was back on the bus on schedule and our driver had us back in Aberdeen in good time. It was good to see such a good turn out and we hope to see you at our AGM on the 5th at the Sportsman’s Club.
