On the longest day of the year, the Aberdeen Hillwalking Club headed to Moulin, near Pitlochry, for a beautiful day in the sun.
The group split up early on, with some walkers braving a steep ascent up Ben Vrackie and others undertaking their own variations of the walk. The trails were well kept and signposted, making it easy to adapt the route to one’s liking. There was also a cafe along the way – a rare treat – giving the group the chance to stop for a cold drink and a rest in the shade.
The walk from Moulin to Killiecrankie
Those who opted for walk 1 left Moulin just after 10 am and walked through woodland and open moorland to Loch a’ Choire. From the loch, an 841m climb over stepping stones led to the top of Ben Vrackie, where a few people enjoyed a well-deserved break to admire the views.
The walkers then headed back down the trail and walked along the boggy shores of Loch a’ Choire and through pastures to Killiecrankie. The Killiecrankie Visitor Centre was a great spot for another break, offering some shade, cool drinks, and the chance to learn more about the local flora, fauna, and history.
The last section was a gentle walk through the woods, offering some welcome shelter from the sun and the heat.
Ending the walk in Pitlochry
Some of the walkers closed the day with a refreshing drink at a pub in Pitlochry, while others opted for a cool ice cream before going back to the bus.
The 30 walkers made it back to Aberdeen around 8 pm. It was the perfect summer day, with a 360-degree view of the hills. What an improvement from the last club walk!
As usual, a big thank you to everyone who came along and to our driver.
