The first outing of 2025 saw our group of 32 walkers depart from Aberdeen on a very bright but cold and crisp day to head out Deeside for a low level walk from Potarch to Aboyne.
After a short comfort break at Banchory we commenced the walk at the Potarch bridge parking area and followed the snowy Deeside Way track towards Kincardine O’ Neil. The River Dee looked spectacular as it flowed over the icy rocks in the river, surrounded by the stark whiteness of the fields and hills.
A group of 6 stayed on the bus to alight at Kincardine O’ Neil, for a slightly shorter route to Aboyne while 1 person opted for a walk around Bell Wood in Aboyne.
Despite the previous weeks heavy snowfall, the tracks were firm under foot and the hard packed snow did not cause problems to walk on. Our route through Dess Woods led us to the Dess waterfall which did not disappoint in a magical winter scene with snow laden trees and water cascading over the icy rocks.
A short lunch stop was taken near the footbridge before crossing it and continuing on the Deeside Way route. We then joined the old rail track bed, passing the Loch of Aboyne and the Golf course which was devoid of players that day. We successfully manoeuvred under and around some fallen trees on the path before arriving at Aboyne.
Most of the group arrived early and had time for coffee in the local coffee shops before we left for our Festive meal at The Scott Skinner Restaurant in Banchory.
We enjoyed an excellent 2/3 course meal and the group were able to catch up on the events of the day before leaving Banchory at 5.15pm. Ryan our driver had us all back safely in Aberdeen around 6.00pm having enjoyed a very good winter outing.
Our thanks to the restaurant staff and Fiona for organising this super meal.
