Walk Notes

N.B. 8.00am start from Aberdeen.

Today, we are back on Deeside to walk the hills to the south east side of Ballater. Your Club have not done this walk since October 2008. We will have a short comfort stop at Aboyne, before heading towards our start point at Cambus o’May. This walk is a circular one, so members who require a shorter or different walk – please indicate your intentions with your committee member in charge of the bus.

The walk commences at the Cambus o’ May car park, just off the A93 (NGR 422 974) North Deeside Road near the Old Deeside Railway station. Follow the “Old Deeside Line” NW’wards for a short distance and then cross the white suspension bridge over the River Dee to enter Torphantrick Wood. Head S’wards through the wood, without deviation, to eventually reach the B976 South Deeside Road. Turn right along this road for about 200m to arrive at a farm track (NGR 416 967), on the opposite side of the road, heading SW’wards. Take this track and follow it as it meanders up through the woods on the west side of the Pollagach Burn. Head S’wards to gain the summit of Pannanich Hill (601m) on a line of least resistance (no path and often quite wet underfoot). From the summit, first go downwards (NW’wards) to an unnamed top at 578m, but this path eventually veers NE’wards to eventually drop W’wards at approx. (NGR 403 960) into the forest to gain a path at NGR 400 967. This path soon leads to a climbable gate to gain the B976 South Deeside Road. Cross this road, and head downhill towards the farm at Glascorrie, but, before this farm is reached, pass through a gate on your right, and head N’wards towards the River Dee. Descend to a path and follow this riverside path E‘wards along the north side of Torphantrick Wood for about 1.5miles to arrive back at the white suspension bridge over the River Dee. Cross the bridge to the north side of the river, turn right and after a short time, arrive at our bus near the Cambus o’May car park. (NGR 422 974)
